I watched that episode just to see that infamous woman and I laughed for three days
idk why it was so impossible for them to find Melody
how difficult is it to go to the orphanage on the same night that you were there in 1969 and wait outside to catch her when she runs away
Here’s the official explanation:
DWM: So where is the Doctor actually going at the end of the episode (A Good Man Goes To War)?
Moffat: He’s going to see if he can find out what happens to Melody. He’s seeing if there’s any point in which he can interfere in Melody’s past that can extract her in time. He can’t.
DWM: So it’s that same idea we were talking about before (gaps in the Doctor’s life) — to see if there are any ‘gaps’ in her life that will enable him to pluck her out of time?
Moffat: Yes, but… The simple version for BBC One is that he was looking for Melody and he can’t find her. Not even that she was living in Leadworth. But even if he had, he still wouldn’t be able to change it. It’s already happened. It’s already fixed.
So it’s not that he can’t find her at all: he can’t find her at a point where he can remove her from what’s happened in her timeline and bring her home.
But speaking of Melody in 1969: I was so surprised when I watched “Day of the Moon” again and River actually asks the Doctor to rescue the little girl. It’s the only time when I’ve seen River try to change her timeline. Even right after this, she goes back to having to let events happen as they did.
Now I wonder if this was meant to foreshadow AGMGTW and LKH. Because the Doctor’s reply to River was “but how [could he find her]?”
Ah, that makes more sense. I didn’t know that Moffat had addressed it. So he might even see her, but then his Time Lordy senses kick in and tell him that it’s a fixed point. How depressing. No wonder he’s cracked a couple of times.
