Anonymous asked: you are a pretentious prick who is also a transphobic piece of trash, go to hell

There is so much of this stuff in my ask box, and most of it not even anonymous, but I don’t want to call out any particular user because I know they’ll then get a lot of hateful asks and the cycle will just continue.

First off, there’s a comma splice in your ask. I just have to let you know that, on account of how I’m a pretentious prick.

I hope that I’m not transphobic. I’ve been public and vocal in my support for the rights of trans people for years, and I’ve tried over the years to amplify trans voices, from T Cooper to Stephen Ira Beatty, rather than pretending to be able to speak for them.

Look, I am a person, and I am not a particularly good one. I am screwed up and make a lot of mistakes. But I am not a piece of trash. I would imagine that you are also screwed up and make a lot of mistakes, but you aren’t a piece of trash either.

But it is still hurtful—very hurtful—to hear people call me a piece of trash. It just makes me sad to hear, the way I think it would make most people sad to hear. The certainty and lack of nuance in that characterization reflects a broader lack of nuance in online discourse these days that just bums me out.

Stuff like this? It’s not activism. It’s hate mongering.

And it’s not even correct. Just because you levy an accusation at someone doesn’t make you right about it.

This is the kind of stuff that will ruin the internet, if we let it. I hope we can get ourselves together and end this so we can have good things.

It is really, really incredibly important to realize and to act on the fact that just because you don’t like what someone does/says doesn’t mean you should send them hate mail or malicious messages. It never surprises me that people do this sort of thing, but is so heartachingly sad to see it done to someone who is a pretty damn good guy, for being just a human like the rest of us on this fucking planet.

Don’t like someone? Fine. Keep it to your own goddamn self and stop spewing it everywhere. And certainly keep it out of their fucking inbox.

Anonymous asked: I thought about your statement about women not being opressed in the western world anymore and I think you might have a point. Women can become literally anything nowadays, whereI live they even advertise for women to join the military or choose technical/chemical/mathematical professions. Angela Merkel is one of the most powerfull people in germany (I'm not german). Patriachy might still be a thing in third world countries, but I can't see/feel it where I live.

Exactly.

Although, I have to point out that patriarchy doesn’t exist in third world countries either. A patriarchal society would favor men over women. But that’s really not how third world countries work.

Anyone can be oppressed in third world countries but men are not the oppressors. Religion, rich people and the government oppress people. And these people include literally everyone. Not just women.

Women not opressed in the western world? Seriously? Do we live in the same world? Maybe the problem isn’t partiarchy but women are sitll opressed damn it.

The rules of the game are just different.

No. Do you even know what the word oppression means? If women were oppressed, we wouldn’t have ANY kind of right (or maybe just a little amount of rights), ridiculous laws would forbid us to do anything we enjoy, we could be enslaved, people who own us would treat us like shit and beat the hell out of us when we don’t obey, our freedom would be entirely restricted etc.

So you think the Western world is like that?

No, the problem is just that you’re 17 and you have a very simplistic idea of what oppression is. Wait a few years and then join an activism movement once you understand what’s going on. Meanwhile, listen and learn. Ask questions and provide constructive criticism when you think you see room for improvement, but don’t pretend that you’re an authority on the matter. I’m only 20, so I’m not claiming to be an authority, either, but it seems that I’ve been privileged enough to receive a better quality of education regarding these matters than you have (“Maybe just a little amount of rights,” for fuck’s sake, really?), and at least I recognize that I’m still learning. And don’t you dare claim to know that women in third world countries don’t face oppression for being women.

The problem is that you compare my knowledge about the world to my age. Which I get a lot from people when I argue about something. Like their argument is that I’m too young to know something about the world.

I have never claimed that my knowledge about the world is final and perfect. I’m constantly reading articles and watching videos about feminism and the injustice in the world. I always have something new to learn.

I have never been oppressed in any way but I’ve been learning about oppression. And sorry if I didn’t mention the other hundred thousand features of oppression. I thought I’d just give that person an idea of what oppression is really like considering she thought that women are oppressed in the Western world. But here you are, claiming that my idea of oppression is simplistic yet you didn’t bother to explain why. If you think I’m wrong about something, at least try to correct me so that I can reconsider my thoughts.

My age is really insignificant in this matter considering we’re both finghting for the same cause, which is gender equality. But the difference between you and me is that I don’t want to choose women’s issues over any other gender’s issues. I want to address every gender’s issues equally. Regardless of your gender, suffering is horrible and no one should just emphasize the problems of one group of people claiming that they suffer more and in the meanwhile forget about the fact that not just women can suffer.

17 isn’t too young to know about these things. You’ve just made it obvious that you don’t. Your age helps explain it, that’s all. I said last time I argued with you that I’m not going to waste my time explaining. You seem to have made up your mind for the time being. I’m not too concerned about your ignorance. You’re only 17. You’ll learn in a few years.

It’s wonderful that you want to help different groups of people. You seem to be forgetting that feminism is about women, though. Plenty of feminists are involved in other causes, and third-wave feminism focuses on intersectionality anyway.

we’d only just met. i’m a psychopath. i’m not rude.
